About Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge

Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest restored tallgrass prairie ecosystems in North America, covering more than 8,600 acres east of Des Moines. The refuge is home to a free-roaming bison herd visible year-round, and the restored prairie supports an exceptional community of grassland birds that have largely disappeared from Iowa's agricultural landscape. Bobolinks, dickcissels, and upland sandpipers breed here in summer; sandhill cranes pass through in spring and fall; and the native wildflower display from June through August rivals anything in the state.

Species to look for

  • American Bison Bison bison
  • Bobolink Dolichonyx oryzivorus
  • Dickcissel Spiza americana
  • Upland Sandpiper Bartramia longicauda
  • Sandhill Crane Antigone canadensis

Photographer notes

The 2.5-mile auto tour route puts you at prairie level for bison encounters — bison are wild animals and distances vary by day, but the herd is reliably visible from the road. Early morning in June and July is exceptional for grassland bird song and activity. For bison portraits, use a long lens (400mm+) and shoot from inside your vehicle, which serves as an effective blind. The overlook near the Prairie Learning Center offers a wide prairie panorama — good for atmospheric shots in golden hour.

Getting there

Located on NE 154th Ave in Prairie City, approximately 25 miles east of Des Moines via US-163. The Prairie Learning Center visitor center is open daily with exhibits, restrooms, and trail information. Auto tour route is accessible year-round during daylight hours.

Ethics and responsible access

Bison are unpredictable and powerful. Never approach on foot or attempt to leave your vehicle near the herd. Maintain 100+ yards on foot in areas where hiking is permitted. Drone use is prohibited over wildlife on federal refuges.
