About DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge

DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge on the Iowa–Nebraska border is home to one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in the Midwest. Each November, up to 500,000 snow geese and other waterfowl stage on the Missouri River oxbow here before continuing south. Bald eagles follow the geese, and the refuge routinely hosts 50–100 eagles during peak migration. The refuge visitor center houses a remarkable collection of artifacts from the 1865 steamboat Bertrand, recovered from the Missouri riverbed.

Species to look for

  • Snow Goose Anser caerulescens
  • Bald Eagle Haliaeetus leucocephalus
  • Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons
  • Cackling Goose Branta hutchinsii
  • Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus

Photographer notes

Peak snow goose numbers typically occur mid-October through mid-November. The best photography happens at dawn and dusk when the geese lift off and land in massive waves — the sound alone is unforgettable. Position yourself at the DeSoto Lake overlook or the east observation platform. Eagles perch in cottonwoods along the lake edge; a 500–600mm lens puts you in good shape for perched birds. The parking lot at the visitor center faces west for good afternoon light on the lake.

Getting there

Located on US-30, approximately 5 miles west of Missouri Valley, Iowa, or 25 miles north of Council Bluffs. The refuge entrance and visitor center are clearly signed from US-30. Free admission. Open dawn to dusk; visitor center hours vary seasonally.

Ethics and responsible access

Snow geese are easily flushed in large numbers, which disrupts feeding and migration timing. Stay on designated roads and overlooks. Do not enter closed areas, which are posted seasonally to protect roosting concentrations. Eagle nesting areas may have seasonal closures — check the refuge website before visiting in spring.
